Match Report

On Friday night last Waterpark entertained another Leinster Division 1 side, Cill Dara, for the second week running, this time in Ballinakill, and with one eye on the forthcoming Garryowen Cup fixture the following Sunday against Fethard, the selectors decided to give the majority of the younger members of the panel an opportunity to showcase their talents and even though they were on the wrong end of a 5 ā€“ 12 scoreline they performed well enough to convince those present that they are quite capable of playing at this level. This was a game which was played in two twentyfive minute segments and during the first half the visitors more mature and bigger forwards had the edge in the set pieces and on ten minutes after constant pressure had put five points on the board with a try from a five metre scrum. Just before halftime they had increased the margin to 0 -12 with a converted try from a move off a lineout inside the Park twentytwo. Throughout the half this young Park side were getting to grips with their opposition and after the break they continued in an upward vein to pressurize the Kildare side at every opportunity to hold them scoreless during the second period and after fifteen minutes this pressure finally told when scrum half Brian Jackman was on the end of a good passing movement to cross for the try and reduce the gap to 5 ā€“ 12. Park finished the stronger but were unable to add to their tally before the final whistle brought an end to the game. A very good run out which has given the selectors food for thought and which Iā€™m sure will stand in good stead for these young players as the season progresses.
