Garryowen Cup Final:
Waterpark 11 -Clonmel 18
There was Disappointment for Waterpark in a keenly contested match where Clonmel came out on top by seven points. Waterpark had a number of opportunities to win the game but could not take them.
The game started with Waterpark straight on the attack and the early pressure yielded a penalty, which out half Gareth Molloy struck just wide. Clonmel won a penalty which was converted to give them a 3 nil advantage, this soon turned into a 10 point lead when some poor defending left the Clonmel out half score under the posts. At this stage the Waterpark scrum and line out was under constant pressure from the Clonmel forwards. Poor discipline from the Clonmel prop left Waterpark back into the game and Molloy kicked the resultant penalty. This score put life back into the Ballinakill side and winger Paddy Kiesery scored a try after a quick tap penalty from scrum half Donal Kavanagh. Molloy missed the conversion to leave the score 10 points to 8 at half time. The second half was error- prone game with both sides making many fundamental mistakes. Some poor Waterpark play from the kick off gave Clonmel a penalty inside the Waterpark 22, which was dispatched into the corner. From the line out the Clonmel forwards mauled their way over the try line. Replacement outhalf Colin O’Shea kicked a penalty for Waterpark to leave the score line at 15 -11. But again Waterpark handed Clonmel 3 points from the restart to put the Tipperary side 18- 11 up with 20 minutes to play. Try as they might Waterpark could not find a way to break down a resolute Clonmel defence. A number of kickable penalties were kicked to the corner but each time Clonmel held firm to hold out for the win.
